The Heart of Braj: A Holi Narrative
In Mathura, Vrindavan, and Barsana, Holi unfolds as a powerful blend of color, devotion, and collective energy.
At 6:30 AM, while much of the city is still waking up, the Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura is already alive with celebration. Beneath its ancient carved columns, the first clouds of gulal begin to fill the air, marking the start of the day’s Holi festivities. In these early moments, devotion, color, and tradition come together in a shared expression of joy.
Beyond the colors and celebration, Holi is also about human connection. Within the temple courtyards of the Braj region, devotees and visitors come together in moments of warmth, joy, and shared tradition.
Away from the temples, the narrow streets of Mathura are filled with a different kind of energy. Street food vendors work tirelessly through the day, serving endless crowds as the aroma of hot oil, sweets, and snacks fills the air. The blur of motion in this frame reflects the pace and intensity of the festival, where food and celebration become an inseparable part of the experience
In Barsana, the festival transforms the entire town into a sea of color. Clouds of gulal drift through the narrow streets and rooftops as thousands gather to celebrate together. From above, the scale and energy of Holi feel almost overwhelming, with the entire landscape immersed in shades of pink and red.
As the celebrations intensify, the temples of Barsana disappear into thick clouds of red gulal. In these moments, the scale of the festival becomes overwhelming, with color filling the air and briefly obscuring the temple structures beneath it
Amid the energy and noise of the festival, there are also moments of quiet reflection. This portrait captures a devotee deeply immersed in the spirit of Holi, his face covered in layers of color gathered through the day’s celebrations.
As yellow gulal fills the air, the crowd moves together in a shared moment of celebration. Raised hands emerge through the drifting color, capturing the energy and intensity of Holi at its peak.
Even amid centuries-old traditions, the presence of the digital world is impossible to miss. Smartphones rise above the crowd as people pause to record and share moments from the celebration, blending modern habits with an ancient festival.
We close with the violet hour. As the day begins to settle, the air turns to purple smoke. The intensity remains, but there is a sense of completion—a city finally painted into its final, most vibrant form
As the sun dips lower, the frantic energy of the Braj region begins to soften. This is the moment of the quiet return. Moving away from the temple squares and back into the narrow galis, the participants carry the festival with them—not just in spirit, but etched into every fiber of their clothes and every strand of hair. Bathed in a final, golden beam of light, they disappear into the shadows, leaving the streets to settle. The celebration has ended, but the transformation is complete.
Beyond the Colors ......
The dust eventually settles, and the vibrant pigments wash away, but the narrative of these streets remains. This collection is a study of contrast: the ancient and the digital, the chaotic and the harmonious, the grand scale of the temple and the intimate grace of a single devotee. In capturing the transition from the first morning light at Dwarkadhish to the quiet, powder-stained return, we find that Holi is not just a festival of color, but a testament to the enduring rhythm of human connection.
